i2Insights statistics

The Integration and Implementation Insights (i2Insights) toolkit was established to share methods, frameworks, processes, concepts, theories and competencies that help in better understanding and acting on complex societal and environmental problems. It is aimed at researchers and higher education teachers and, as well as providing a toolkit for them to use, sets out to strengthen the global network that connects them. A fuller description of aims is available at: https://i2insights.org/about/aims-and-overview-of-i2insights/ and: https://i2insights.org/2025/11/25/strengthening-i2insights-toolkit/

Every three months the i2Insights team reviews selected statistics about i2Insights to assess progress towards achieving the aims. Here we report those statistics to the end of December 2025. The next update (to the end of March 2026) will be published in April 2026.

At the beginning of 2026 we introduced a new way of presenting the statistics, occasioned by ongoing changes to the web analytics service we use. The previous way of presenting the i2Insights statistics, to the end of September 2025, is available to view (PDF 2MB).

The statistics reported here cover:

CONTRIBUTIONS

1. Number of blog posts published each month

Figure 1 shows the number of blog posts published each month. The number published ranges from 1-10 (the darker the colour, the greater the number), with the explanatory notes providing information about the variations.

Explanatory notes:
The aim is to publish one contribution per week, which results in 4 or 5 blog posts per month, depending on the number of weeks in that month. A break from mid-late December to early-mid January means that there are sometimes only 2 or 3 contributions in those months.

The aim of building momentum meant that two contributions were published per week for most of 2016 and the first 3 months of 2017. Most, but not all, of these contributions came from the association with SESYNC (US National Socio-Environmental Synthesis Center), which was very active at that time. From April 2017 the number was deliberately reduced to one per week, as that was considered to be more sustainable in the long term.

Publication of the Stakeholder Engagement Primer over 10 weeks in addition to the regular weekly contributions, raised the number of blog posts published from October to December 2021 and the same is true for the Understanding Diversity Primer which was published from April to June 2022. Two contributions were published per week when more than two months of contributions were in hand (in order to avoid publication delays) and when authors produced companion posts (eg., Parts 1 and 2 on the same topic).

A trial blog post was published in May 2015, before i2Insights officially launched in November 2015. A blog post published in November 2024 was redacted, leaving only three blog posts for that month.

2. Total number of authors by country

Figure 2 shows the number of people who have contributed blog posts from different countries. To the end of December 2025 there were 759 authors from 61 countries.

Most authors (both first authors and co-authors) come from the USA, followed by Australia, Germany and the United Kingdom. For most other countries the number of contributing authors is small.

Additional information::
The year in which the first contribution from a country was received is shown at: https://i2insights.org/about/i2insights-statistics/milestones/

Technical notes::
Each contributor is counted only once, even if they authored and/or co-authored more than one blog post. If a contributor is a first author and a co-author on different blog posts, they are counted only as a first author. If an author is affiliated with more than one country over time, the country of residence at the time of first publishing in i2Insights is counted. If an author is affiliated with more than one country at the time of first publishing, the country in which they are primarily domiciled is counted.

3. Number of comments published each month

Figure 3 shows the number of comments attracted and published in each month over the lifetime of i2Insights. It can be seen that the number of comments is highly variable, with the darker colours indicating more comments.

VISITORS AND VIEWS

4. Number of visitors in each month

Figure 4 shows the number of visitors in each month, with the darker colours indicating more visitors. Overall, it can be seen that the number of visitors rose reasonably steadily until peaking in 2023, after which the numbers dropped. Visitor numbers tend to be lower in December, June, July and August corresponding with the Christmas break and the northern hemisphere summer. Numbers also tend to be a little lower in January corresponding to the southern hemisphere summer. As can be seen from Figure 1, fewer contributions are published in December and sometimes also in January.

5. Number of views per month

Figure 5 shows the number of views per month, with darker colours indicating more views. As is the case with visitors in each month, overall, it can be seen that the number of views rose reasonably steadily until peaking in 2023, after which the numbers dropped. The number of views tends to be lower in December, June, July and August corresponding with the Christmas break and the northern hemisphere summer. Views also tend to be a little lower in January corresponding to the southern hemisphere summer. As can be seen from Figure 1, fewer contributions are published in December and sometimes also in January.

6. Monthly averages of views per day

Figure 6 shows the monthly averages of views per day, with the darker colours indicating more views. The pattern largely follows that of visitors and views per month (see Figures 4 and 5 above).

7. Total number of views by country

Figure 7 shows the views by visitors from each country. It can be seen that the number of views ranges from 1 to more than 400,000 over the lifetime of i2Insights. In particular, a separate analysis (not shown here) found that there have been views from all of the 193 countries that are members of the United Nations.

The darker the colour, the more views. The most views come from the USA, United Kingdom and Australia. The next group of countries in terms of number of views of i2Insights is Canada, India, South Africa, Germany and Switzerland.
