i2S and i2Insights

There is a strong connection between Integration and Implementation Sciences (i2S) and Integration and Implementation Insights (i2Insights).

Integration and Implementation Sciences (i2S) is a new discipline providing concepts, methods, processes, theories, frameworks and other tools for conducting research that aims to better understand, and bring about improvements in, complex societal and environmental problems.

Integration and Implementation Insights (i2Insights) blog and toolkit brings i2S to life by collecting the tools that are critical to i2S. In weekly (usually) blog posts, contributors world-wide are invited to briefly describe tools that they have developed or used, and these are then stored in an indexed toolkit (see https://i2insights.org/all-posts/all-post-list/ for a list of all posts and https://i2insights.org/index/ for information about the index).

At the end of 2024, there were 550 blog posts describing various tools by 709 authors from 59 countries (see https://i2insights.org/about/i2insights-statistics/ for more detailed, as well as the latest, statistics).

i2Insights also gives life to i2S by connecting the many individuals and academic communities that develop and apply those tools. These include the following communities: inter- and transdisciplinarity, systems thinking, complexity science, action research, post-normal science, implementation science, the decision sciences, and the science of team science. The index developed for the i2Insights blog and toolkit has also shaped i2S, leading to a redesign of the i2S framework, which is in harmony with the main topics (or categories) of the index. The i2S framework highlights the eleven main categories which comprise the index (in alphabetical order: change, communication, context, decision making, diversity, integration, research implementation, stakeholder engagement, systems, teamwork, unknowns).

Combining the websites

The first iteration of the i2S website was developed in 2002, eventually settling at: https://i2s.anu.edu.au/, with both the development of i2S and the i2S website maturing since then. The i2Insights website for the blog and toolkit, at https://i2insights.org/, was developed in 2015.

In late 2024 we decided to combine the websites, by adding i2S materials from the i2S website to the i2Insights website and this process is now underway.
